College staff misconduct · Accused: former director of sports medicine / head athletic trainer
Female student-athletes, including swimmers, alleged that SJSU's former director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer touched their breasts, buttocks and groin areas without consent under the guise of treatment, with allegations dating from 2006-2009 and federal charges covering 2017-2020.
Status: Charged by the U.S. Department of Justice in March 2022 with six misdemeanor counts of deprivation of rights under color of law involving four athletes.
Response: After a DOJ investigation found SJSU failed to respond adequately, the university paid $1.6 million to 13 athletes and later reached a $3.3 million settlement with 15 former athletes.
