Drugging · Sigma Alpha Epsilon and other IFC chapters

Multiple people reported being drugged without consent at on-campus fraternity house gatherings in September 2021, with allegations involving the SAE chapter.

Status: Under police and university investigation (Sept 2021); no charges reported in sources.

Response: Northwestern and the IFC banned all fraternity social and recruitment events until at least Oct 17, 2021; Sigma Chi was later suspended until fall 2024 for violating the ban and other IFC policies.

2017

Multiple · Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Northwestern investigated reports that four women may have been drugged, two of them sexually assaulted, at a chapter event in January 2017.

Status: University investigation of the drugging/assault reports closed without disciplinary action; chapter separately suspended through Sept 2018 for violating alcohol probation (Apr 2017).

Response: Campus suspension through Sept 1, 2018; SAE national issued a cease-and-desist order (Feb 2017).

2014

College staff misconduct · Accused: former philosophy professor

Years of abuse: 2012-2014

An undergraduate and a philosophy graduate student filed complaints that a philosophy professor sexually assaulted or had nonconsensual sex with them in 2012 and in later years.

Status: Found by Northwestern to have violated its sexual misconduct policy in both cases; he denied the allegations. A student's Title IX lawsuit against the university was dismissed.

Response: Northwestern began termination proceedings; he resigned in November 2015 before they concluded.
