College staff misconduct · Accused: former head swimming and diving coach
A U.S. Department of Justice investigation found that the longtime head swimming and diving coach sexually abused male team members, including unwanted touching and kissing, from 2015 to 2020, and that administrators who knew of complaints failed to act.
Status: Found by the U.S. Department of Justice (March 2024) to have sexually abused student-athletes; never charged (died in 2021).
Response: UMBC's president accepted full responsibility and apologized; the university entered an agreement with DOJ and a $4.1 million settlement for survivors was approved in April 2024, along with Title IX reforms.
