College staff misconduct · Accused: monk professors / priests
Several St. John's Abbey monks who taught at St. John's University were accused of sexual misconduct with students, including a history professor-priest accused of abusing a student in 1970 (a university employee corresponded with the family in 1971) and a psychology professor removed from ministry over early-1980s misconduct with a student; a monk was also restricted after sexually inappropriate questioning of a college student in 2009. Abbey files released in 2016 show one monk admitted to as many as 15 sexual contacts with college students after being recalled from abroad in 1992.
Status: named on abbey's credible list; removed from ministry / restricted; abbey settled suits
Response: abbey knew of allegations for decades, ignored expert warnings and let accused monks continue working; 1970 allegation was relayed to a university employee in 1971
