Hazing · Alpha Eta Rho (professional aviation fraternity)

SLU reported a physical hazing incident involving its Alpha Eta Rho chapter on April 27, 2026, and its Department of Public Safety issued a timely warning.

Status: Chapter suspended by the university for at least one calendar year (2026) while the investigation continues.

2006

Sexual assault · Unnamed fraternity (members hosted off-campus party)

A former SLU field hockey player said she was sexually assaulted in 2006 at an off-campus party hosted by two fraternity members. She sued the university, alleging it removed her from the team after she reported the assault and handled the report poorly.

Status: Alleged in a civil lawsuit against the university. A federal judge granted SLU summary judgment in December 2012, finding its response reasonable. Her attorney said she would appeal.

Response: SLU said her team suspension was due to poor grades and defended its response in court.

1969

College staff misconduct · Accused: former university president and Jesuit priest

Years of abuse: late 1960s

A former Saint Louis University student alleged in a 2012 lawsuit that a Jesuit priest, who later served as the university's president, sexually abused her during a counseling session in the late 1960s. A second woman separately alleged he abused her in 1983 while she was studying abroad.

Status: Alleged in civil lawsuits that he and the university denied. The former student's suit against him and SLU settled for $200,000 in 2016 shortly before trial. The second woman's claims settled for $181,000 in 2003 and $82,000 in 2016.

Response: Saint Louis University was a defendant and settled the former student's lawsuit.
