College staff misconduct · Accused: former professor
Women who had been students at Rust College, a historically Black college, alleged in a federal lawsuit that a former professor sexually abused or harassed students over two decades, including an alleged rape in his campus office in September 2012 and alleged groping in a computer lab and office; they alleged the college knew of his history but kept him on.
Status: Indicted on a sexual battery charge in 2012 and resigned; pleaded guilty to sexual battery in November 2014, receiving a suspended sentence, five years' probation and lifetime sex-offender registration. Six civil claims were dismissed as time-barred; the remaining three were settled in 2015 by the college, its president and the professor for a confidential sum.
Response: The college settled the remaining civil claims on confidential terms.
