College staff misconduct · Accused: former music professor

Years of abuse: 2010-2011

A former music student alleged in a federal lawsuit that a music professor hired in 2006 groomed and sexually harassed female students beginning in October 2010, including inviting students to his hotel room at a conference and giving them alcohol, and that he later raped her; the suit said he was on probation for two California felony sexual assault convictions involving a former student when MSU hired him.

Status: Alleged in a 2013 federal civil lawsuit (later amended to name only MSU on negligent hiring, retention and supervision claims); the Montana Human Rights Bureau process resulted in an award of more than $234,000 from the school and professor; no criminal charges in Montana reported.

Response: The professor resigned in 2011 after a university investigation found he had an inappropriate relationship with a student; MSU sought dismissal of the negligence suit.
