Hazing · Theta Chi

A 19-year-old Theta Chi pledge suffered fatal brain trauma in November 2008 after allegedly being repeatedly tackled at night in a farm field during a 'bulldogging' initiation ritual; his family alleged members made him keep walking until he collapsed and told the hospital he was hurt playing flag football.

Status: Catawba County authorities declined to file criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence. The family's wrongful death suit against the school, fraternity and several students alleged negligence and conspiracy; the fraternity and some members paid more than $4.6 million to settle in 2011, with Theta Chi denying wrongdoing.

Response: Theta Chi no longer operates at the school.
