College staff misconduct · Accused: former director of sports medicine (head athletic trainer)
Years of abuse: 2013-2021
More than 30 former male student-athletes alleged that N.C. State's former director of sports medicine (employed 2012-2022) sexually abused them under the guise of treatment, including genital touching during massages and intrusive observation during drug testing. A Wake County grand jury's indictment covers October 2016 to fall 2021.
Status: Indicted in September 2026 on 32 counts (nine felony counts of sexual contact under pretext of medical treatment and 23 misdemeanor sexual battery counts); arrested in Florida; he denies wrongdoing. A state civil lawsuit by 31 athletes was dismissed in June 2026 on statute-of-limitations and jurisdictional grounds and is being appealed; a separate federal suit was revived by an appeals court in January 2025.
Response: The university said sexual misconduct is unacceptable and that it will cooperate with law enforcement; it said it agreed with the court's dismissal analysis.
