A former women's basketball player alleged that an associate head coach pursued a sexual relationship with her beginning around a 2021 athletics internship, and that she feared retaliation if she refused. She also alleged the program had no policies barring staff from sexual relationships with athletes and that she was not told of her Title IX rights.
Status: Alleged in a 2024 federal civil-rights lawsuit. The university said it disagrees with the allegations and will defend the case.
Response: The coach was suspended with pay in February 2022 and resigned about three months later.
A 17-year-old reported being sexually assaulted at the chapter house in August 2021. Thousands of students protested on several nights.
Status: UNL police opened a criminal investigation, which was ongoing as of October 2021; no charges were reported in the sources reviewed. The university suspended the chapter through 2026.
Response: Temporary suspension on August 25, 2021. The University Conduct Board found code violations and suspended the chapter through 2026, and UNL withdrew recognition. UNL also expanded its sexual misconduct prevention resources.
A former international Ph.D. student in mechanical and materials engineering (2014-2017) alleged that her faculty adviser sexually harassed her for years and retaliated after she reported it. She also alleged Title IX investigators were indifferent and pressured her to drop the case.
Status: Alleged in a 2021 federal lawsuit. No court findings were reported.
UNL found a pattern of violations over several terms, including hazing, reckless alcohol use and inappropriate sexual behavior such as sexual harassment.
Status: Chapter suspended by the university in March 2017, with recognition revoked until at least May 2020.
Response: Recognition revoked. Pledges were barred from the house, and the chapter was required to complete education on sexual misconduct, hazing and alcohol.
Court documents say a 2009 hazing involved a stripper and a sexual act against a fraternity member.
Status: In 2009 UNL police cited eight students: five for hazing and three for hazing and procuring alcohol for a minor.
Response: All fraternity activities suspended.
