College staff misconduct · Accused: former Archbishop of Newark overseeing the university's seminaries
A university-commissioned review found that a former Archbishop of Newark (later a cardinal) used his position of power to sexually harass seminarians at the university's Immaculate Conception Seminary and St. Andrew's Seminary between 1986 and 2000.
Status: Found in a 2019 independent review by Latham & Watkins, commissioned by Seton Hall, to have sexually harassed seminarians and created a culture of fear and intimidation; laicized by the Vatican in February 2019.
Response: Seton Hall adopted a five-point plan including an independent Title IX review, closer oversight of the seminaries, a chief compliance officer and mandatory annual Title IX training; the review found university policies were not always followed at the seminaries.
