Hazing · Pi Kappa Alpha (Delta Beta chapter)

A 20-year-old pledge died of alcohol poisoning in March 2021 after a chapter initiation event built around finishing a bottle of alcohol.

Status: Eight former members pleaded guilty or were found guilty on charges including reckless homicide, hazing and furnishing alcohol to a minor (2021-2022); two were acquitted of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide (2022). Family settled its lawsuit with BGSU for $2.9 million (Jan 2023); court documents show more than $7 million in payouts from the fraternity and individuals.

Response: BGSU permanently expelled the chapter in April 2021 and adopted an anti-hazing plan including a prevention coordinator; Ohio enacted tougher hazing penalties.
