Hazing · All 15 fraternities (seven under hazing allegations)

Ohio University received hazing allegations involving seven fraternities within a single week in fall 2019; the dean of students cited a 'potentially escalating systemic culture.'

Status: All 15 fraternity chapters suspended by the university, effective immediately and indefinitely (Oct 2019), pending investigations.

Response: Immediate, indefinite suspension of all fraternities; the marching band and men's rugby were also suspended.

2018

Hazing · Sigma Pi

An 18-year-old freshman died in November 2018 of asphyxiation from nitrous oxide ingestion; a family lawsuit alleged extensive hazing including forced drug and alcohol use and beatings, which the fraternity denied.

Status: Nine men, most of them chapter members, indicted in 2019 on charges including involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, hazing and drug offenses; all nine members had pleaded guilty to various charges by August 2020 (e.g., negligent homicide, hazing, drug counts). Family wrongful-death lawsuit filed.

Response: Ohio University expelled the Sigma Pi chapter in April 2019; the case prompted 'Collin's Law' to strengthen Ohio hazing penalties.
