Hazing · Kappa Sigma
A Bloomsburg University freshman died in September 2019 after a night of drinking at a fraternity rush party hosted at a sorority members' house, where a wrongful-death lawsuit alleged he was given liquor and took part in a 'crate race'; he later fell down an embankment.
Status: No criminal charges were filed (coroner ruled the death accidental). In a wrongful-death suit, the fraternity and dozens of members reached confidential settlements; in January 2026 a Luzerne County jury awarded $7.8 million, assigning 35% of fault to Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and 35% to Kappa Sigma.
Response: The university was not sued; Bloomsburg later overhauled and then eliminated its fraternity and sorority system in 2021.
