Prosecutors alleged that over three nights in November 2016 a Pi Kappa Alpha pledge was forced to roll in vomit, spit and feces, denied food, drink and sleep, and tackled in the dark during a game, leaving him hospitalized with a lacerated spleen.
Status: A Harris County grand jury returned a misdemeanor hazing indictment against the fraternity organization itself in December 2017 (punishable by a fine up to $10,000); no individual members were indicted in that action.
Response: UH suspended the chapter until 2023 and said the indictment sent a firm message; the international fraternity suspended the chapter's charter in August 2017.
